Online Talk: From bees to Drones: Exploring bio-inspired machine vision applications for precision agriculture

Bees are used as vectors for pollination and transport of agricultural chemicals in outdoor agriculture and greenhouses. However, in certain situations the use of natural pollinators is problematic. Small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) could serve as an alternate pollination vector in such situations and perform other functions. A step towards the deployment of such a tool is to bring the ability to locate, classify, and analyze flowers aboard a drone.

76th Annual IEEE Ottawa Section AGM

This year due to the public health concerns and restrictions on public gathering due to the COVID-19, 76th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the IEEE Ottawa Section will be held using virtual meeting tools on 5th November 2020 at 6:30 PM.  Registration is required to attend the meeting and also for voting.  The link to the virtual meeting will be emailed one day prior to the meeting. The business of the meeting is to approve the budget and elect the section executive for 2021.

To vote at the AGM one has to be an IEEE member (Graduate Student level or higher) in good standing. Online registrations are now open until the midnight of 3rd November 2020 at:  https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/242973

Environmental Entrepreneurship: Bridging Gap between Innovation and Function

Abstract:

Environmental challenges of the current century are systemic threats
to the fabric of our civilization. In this context, environmental
entrepreneurship has emerged as a key mitigation concept that combines
economic and environmental dimensions by leveraging state-of-the-art
technology innovations. Seeing entrepreneurship through the lens of
engineering innovation is crucial to produce actionable theory for
sustainable technology. But what are the environmental entrepreneurship
elements, challenges, and success factors? How can researchers,
technology innovators, and entrepreneurs connect to this emerging field?

This seminar introduces environmental entrepreneurship as the process
of discovering, evaluating, and exploiting market forces that allow to
have effective and fast business cases in environmentally-relevant
markets. The seminar will also discuss views on bridging academic
innovation and technology productization to deliver pragmatic solutions
to environmental challenges of the planet.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Mostafa Farrokhabadi is the Senior Director of Technology at
BluWave-ai, an internationally award-winning startup offering
data-driven control and optimization solutions for smart grids. He has
10 years of experience in designing mission-critical grid solutions for
industry and academia, including technical leadership of a $6M
international consortium in Electric Grid Modernization, and Smart Grid
projects with Hatch and Canadian Solar. Mostafa has authored/co-authored
several high-impact technical papers and patents on intelligent control
and optimization of renewable-penetrated grids. Mostafa obtained his
Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of
Waterloo. He has also studied and performed research in Sweden at KTH
and Germany at KIT. Mostafa has received multiple business, research,
and teaching awards, including the prestigious University of Waterloo
Doctoral Thesis Completion Award and Ottawa’s Forty Under 40. Currently,
he serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid
and IEEE DataPort, and Secretary of IEEE Ottawa Section.

Abstract:
The manufacturing of Power Transformers is integrated into a global supply chain. With the advancement of technology, the design and manufacturing of Power Transformers is getting more aggressive, in terms of reducing clearance and use of pure mineral oil during Factory Acceptance Test to ensure the passing of tests. Temperature, moisture, and dust-controlled clean room and environmental conditions can be compromised during the manufacturing process, which can have impact on the life expectancy of transformers. This presentation will walk the attendees through the Quality Assurance of transformers during their manufacturing process. The principles of Quality Assurance of Power Transformers are also applicable to other electrical components and equipment. This webinar can, therefore, be of interest to electrical engineers and students of various profiles.

Speaker Bio:
Ronniee Minhaz received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Manitoba, Canada. Before founding his own company “Transformer Consulting Services Inc. (www.tc-servicesinc.com)”, Ronnie worked as Transformer Designer at Pauwels Canada (Manufacturer), as Equipment Engineer at SNC Lava Lin(EPCM) and Enmax Power(Utility), as Substation Lead Engineer at McGregor Construction(Substation Construction). Ronnie has the experience of performing Quality Assurance inspections in Transformer Manufacturing plants around the world. Besides providing services on Transformer as consultant, Ronnie has been instructor in training, workshop, conferences and seminars related to transformer around the world.

Ronnie is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Alberta, Canada and an IEEE Senior Member. He held various leadership positions at the IEEE Section level and as a regular member of the IEEE PES Society. He is a member of several Working Groups and Task Forces in the IEEE PES Transformers Committee.
