IEEE Ottawa STEM Bursary

The Ottawa Section, in conjunction with the IEEE Canadian Foundation, is pleased to announce a new annual bursary that aims to support students entering the first year of post-secondary education in IEEE related fields.

Description:

  • A bursary for successful secondary school graduates to help finance initial enrollment in a STEM-related post secondary program.
  • The dollar amount will be $3000.
  • The bursary will be awarded annually to one (1) successful nominee.

Purpose:

  • To promote enrollment in post-secondary education in an eligible STEM program by providing an incentive for youth facing adversity.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Demonstrated financial need or adverse circumstances. Criteria to be determined by a nominating institution, as noted below (Nomination Process).
  • Successful admission acceptance by a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada
  • Eligible Fields of Study:
    • Fields of study of interest to IEEE
  • Types of program:
    • Full-time undergraduate degree or diploma programs.
  • No immediate relatives of officers of IEEE Ottawa section, or the Awards and Recognition committee

Nomination Process:

  • Nomination by a qualified institution, which will identify eligible candidates in terms of financial need or other adversity. Examples: High School Guidance Councillors, Teachers, Principals, and Extracurricular Associations.
  • Complete a nomination form to be designed by Ottawa Section
  • Proof of enrollment in an accredited post-secondary institution, showing the program. Proof of acceptance by such an institution will suffice during the initial nomination process, but proof of enrollment is required prior to bursary award.
  • Information form and letter of introduction submitted by the student
  • Nomination and selection deadlines to be posted online with application forms

Selection:

  • Demonstrated financial need and/or adverse circumstances as evidenced by the nominating institution
  • Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for STEM studies by the student including participation in extracurricular activities (e.g., science fairs), hobbies and/or clubs associated with technology
  • Awareness by the student of IEEE’s activities and mission
  • Successful candidate will be recommended by the Ottawa Section Awards and Recognition committee

Payment:

  • The recipient’s post-secondary institution will be contacted by IEEE Canadian Foundation regarding the awarding of the bursary and financial arrangements.   Payment will be made directly to the educational institution to be credited to the student’s account.

Certificate:

  • A framed certificate will be presented to the bursary holder by the Section Chair at the Annual General Meeting.
