This year, the annual Professional Development Sustainable Technologies Seminar/Workshop will focus on examination of advances in “Nuclear Reactor Technologies” and “Nuclear Waste Management Issues and Solutions”.  We are fortunate to have industry experts to speak and take part on the panel discussion from Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (R & D), and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). For more info on our speakers, please see the BIOs at the bottom of this message.

In order to participate for both our members and the public, you need to register by clicking: https://opeo-nucleartechworkshop.eventbrite.ca

We are thankful to the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) for their financial sponsorship for this year’s workshop. And we are also pleased to have Paul Acchione, P. Eng., President and Chair – OSPE to participate on the Panel Discussion. Paul has 31 years’ experience in the power generation industry.

BIO for our participants:
1.Rick Dindsbury:
Rick is currently the General Manager of R&D with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL).  Rick started his career with AECL as a reactor physicist working on the application of advanced fuel cycles in CANDU power reactors.  Over his 32 year career with AECL, Rick has held a number of technical and managerial positions within AECL’s engineering, reactor operations and research and development departments.  He has played active roles in the delivery of AECL’s Wolsong, Qinshan, Cernavoda and MAPLE reactor projects.  His current technical interests include dynamic simulation of nuclear power plants, computer-aided design and engineering, nuclear power plant configuration management, nuclear instrumentation and reactor control; he has authored numerous papers and reports in these areas.  In his current capacity, Rick is responsible for providing strategic direction and day-to-day oversight to AECL’s Research and Development organization.  Rick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and mathematics from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada.

2. Chris Hatton, P.Eng:
Chris has been the Director of Repository Design and Development with Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) for the past 3 years.  NWMO is the organization founded 10 years ago and charged with developing a long term storage system for Canada’s used nuclear fuel.  He received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1976 and his MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1985.  Chris has over 40 years of practical engineering experience including heavy vessel design and automation design as well as a solid background in the nuclear industry.  After graduation he went to work in design engineering for Sheldons Engineering, a manufacturer of large industrial fans.  His next position was with Babcock and Wilcox Canada where he held a number of positions including manager of nuclear engineering and manager of public relations.  As Candu manufacturing began to wane in the 80’s Chris became a senior partner with Business Development Group, a business consulting firm providing advice to high tech companies.  This led to the founding of an electronics company which he ran until 1999.  The turn of the century saw Chris heading up Quantum Automated Machinery Inc.  Quantum provided automation equipment for the automobile industry.
In 2006, Chris came back to the nuclear industry as engineering manager with Merlin General Corporation.  He has been involved with many consulting projects at OPG’s Nuclear Waste Management Division and was responsible for nuclear waste management on Bruce Power’s unit 3 and 4 calandria replacement project.  Chris is currently in charge of nuclear engineering in the development of Canada’s deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel and he will talk to us about the challenges of designing a facility which must protect the environment for thousands of years.

3. Paul Acchione, P. Eng:  Paul has B.A.Sc. and M.Eng. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto. Paul is a licensed professional engineer in Ontario and is a member of ASME, ANS, IEEE and ISA. Paul has over 40 years of engineering and management experience in the power generation industry. He worked for 31 years with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and its predecessor companies. He is now a Management Consultant at Market Intelligence and Data Analysis Corporation and is the 2013-14 President and Chair of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE).
