Spring 2004 seminar series 

A series of full day seminar modules are presented by experts on business topics.  Four such seminars have been held with great appreciation by participants : (see Innovator, Money Issues, Marketing and Project Management links). We are pleased to offer the seminars as part of EPIC EMS initiative. Application will be made to Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) for 4 CEU EIC credits.   

Hi-Tech Strategic Management in 2004

 This seminar will cover the essential of Hi-tech strategic management needed by technology entrepreneurs to ensure long term success. Practical issues are presented by practioners from the field and presents the best practices from subject matter experts. CONTENT

1.  Dr. Tamas Koplyay  (AM) Universitée du Quebec Outaouais

The presentation will review the evolution of market dynamics in fast moving environments and develop a framework to explain and predict various firm behaviors. The concept of the lifecycle will be used to provide an organizing model and the relationships among product, firm and market lifecycles explored and the challenges faced by senior managers in developing and adjusting strategies to market changes reviewed. Elements of strategy making such as marketing, product development, production and finance will be analysed and related to the evolving strategy. A brief overview of strategy implementation will also be provided especially the key implementation variables of organization structure, decision modes, staffing and compensation regimes.

2.  dr. tony baletti (am) sprott school of business

TTony Bailetti will discuss four commercialization strategies available to technology start-ups: contracting with established firms; product for niche market with investment in complementary asset investment; open new market with substantial investment in technical platforms and complementary assets; and selling ideas and intellectual property. The critical success factors for implementing each strategy will be discussed.

How jointly implementing the PMI project management methodology together with an ISO certified Quality Management System (QMS) can reap substantial strategic benefits for your organization in ensuring a disciplined and consistent approach to project delivery and stakeholder satisfaction. Directly linking PMI and ISO and implement them both concurrently, represents a strategic management decision for an organization.

5.   Mr. Doug Hum (PM) Corporate Renaissance

(PM) The role of partnerships and the use of a channel for creating the virtual sales force. These relationships will be tied to the different stages of the organization. Partnerships and the channel environment can be very challenging with both pitfalls and rewards. How do you manage the potential internal and external conflicts?

6.   Mr. Russell Newbury (pm) Ericcson

 (PM) The fallout from the technology boom & bust is still being felt by most organizations and for many only innovative approaches coupled with strong management will ensure they remain (or become) viable entities while delivering the best value for it's shareholders. Mr. Newbury will present and discuss some issues common to technology organizations and the formulation and successful execution of strategies designed to turn an organization around and bring it to "the next level"..

Presenter Dr.Tamas Koplyay:  Dr. Koplyay has been a professor of (Hi-tech) Strategy in the Executive MBA program of the University of Ottawa since 1990. He is now full professor at the Université du Québec. Recently he has joined the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University as a visiting professor in the PhD program. He also acts as special advisor to the Academic Dean at Algonquin college. Dr. Koplyay is the president of Lifecycle Consulting, a firm specializing in providing advice to hitech/biotech firms in the areas of marketing and strategy. Dr. Koplyay has developed and delivered over 50 courses on strategy, Mergers and Acquisitions, IPO, venture capital financing and incubation, focusing primarily on high tech industry for executive audiences in Canada, Hong Kong and Europe. He has supervised over 100 hundred consulting assignments in the Executive MBA program, resulting in 20 published cases and consulting advice to the client companies including Nortel, Cognos, Mitel, Corel, Calian, Newbridge, QNX, World Heart, Bombardier, Compaq, Dell, Entrust, Biovail, Alliance Atlantis, Philsar, Fulcrum and Rebel.com, Computing Devices Canada, Maclaren Industries, C-Tech Ltd. Dr. Koplyay is regularly consulted by major media outlets on issues concerning the hi-tech industry. Among others, he has given over a 100 media interviews on hi-tech topics to CBC-Venture, Radio Canada, The New RO TV, The Ottawa Citizen, Canadian Business Magazine, TV Ontario, CTV, CBC Newsday and CBC National News. An alliance builder, Dr. Koplyay has championed cooperative relations between the University of Ottawa and business and economic development organizations such as the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA Alliance), Ottawa Center for Research and Innovation (OCRI) and the Université du Québec. Fluent in English, French, and Hungarian, Dr. Koplyay regularly travels to Asia and Europe on teaching and consulting assignments and enjoys a well-developed international perspective for business success. Dr. Koplyay holds a Ph. D. - Systems Science from Michigan State University, B. Sc.- Math/Eng. from McGill University, M.A.- Applied Math M.Sc.- Systems Eng., M. A.- Communications from the State University of New York, MBA - Strategic Management from University of Ottawa and was a Visiting Researcher at Harvard University Law School in international corporate taxation. Prior to joining the university of Ottawa, Dr. Koplyay taught graduate level courses at the State University of New York and Michigan State University. He also worked in both private and public sectors in progressively senior executive positions.

Presenter: Dr. Tony Bailetti holds a faculty appointment in both the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering and the Eric Sprott School of Business at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Professor Bailetti has been the Director of the M.Eng. in Telecommunications Technology Management (TTM) program since 1998. He was the Director of Carleton University's School of Business from 1981 to 1988 and worked at Bell-Northern Research (today a part of Nortel Networks) from 1988 to 1992. Professor Bailetti has published in engineering management journals such as IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Research Policy, and R&D Management. Professor Bailetti has twenty-seven years experience as a faculty member, 24 years at Carleton University (1969-2003) and three years at the University of Manitoba (1966-1969). He has taught for the Executive M.B.A. program offered by Queen's University in Ottawa since 1996.

Professor Bailetti provides consulting services to some of the leading suppliers of telecommunications equipment in the world as well as Canadian service providers, banks, small technology companies, and federal government departments. Professor Bailetti was born and raised in Peru. In 1970, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the United States. He received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Cincinnati in 1973 and 1976 respectively. He won an American Iron and Steel Institute Doctoral Fellowship in 1976. In 1996 he won a Carleton University Teaching Award.

Presenter: Frank Townson Frank has served over 32 years in the federal public service, the last 15 years of which has been in the property/realty/project management disciplines at Industry Canada, Treasury Board and at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). At DFA, he served as Director, Professional and Technical Services (architecture & engineering services, cost estimating, scheduling, risk management, commissioning, informatics); Director, Berlin Embassy Project (design, construction and delivery of a $200 million PPP initiative); Director, Property Programs (portfolio strategy, realty analysis); and Director, Project Implementation (project management and delivery, interior design). Frank introduced the Project Management Institute (PMI) methodology as the project delivery methodology of choice in his Bureau. As Management ““champion””, he arranged training for staff, and adapted internal business processes and project delivery system to incorporate the PMI approach. Concurrent with the introduction of PMI, Frank also introduced ISO as a management discipline to ensure consistency and focus on stakeholder satisfaction. Frank and his team documented all major project delivery processes, procedures and work instruments, developed templates and working tools, and trained staff and achieved the coveted ISO 9001:2000 certification (the first organizational unit in the Department to be accredited to the ISO standard). A certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Frank also serves as the Director of Strategic Planning for the PMI Ottawa Valley Outaouais Chapter (PMI-OVOC) and is a Member of the Project Management Institute (PMI), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA. He holds a Graduate Certificate in Real Property from York University, a Masters in Public Administration (cum laude) from Carleton University and a Bachelors in Political Science (Honours, cum laude) from Laurentian University. Frank recently received the Queen’’s Golden Jubilee Medal for Volunteer Community Service: 20 years with Scouts Canada and 18 years with Little League Canada (currently Umpire-in-Chief).

Presenter: Edward Myers: Mr. Myers has been in the high tech industry for 25 years beginning in the late 70’s as Content Director for the NABU Network, a company that had the vision of the Internet fifteen years before the Web caught fire. After five years of creating content development alliances with some of the world’s largest media companies, Myers decided to try his hand at being an entrepreneur and started Sourcenet Corporation, which Myers moved to Silicon Valley in the mid eighties. Sourcenet developed an on-line service called VentureLine which matched investors and entrepreneurs globally. VentureLine is still active today marrying up technology gurus and financial experts as well as providing on-line advice to both parties.

Edward moved back to Canada in 1992 to take over the new business development portfolio of Spar Aerospace Applied Systems Group where he forged many strategic alliances with leading companies to take Spar into the information age. After a five-year stint at Spar, Myers took a couple of years off to assist several start-up companies get going. Currently, Edward is National Director of Business Development for Galaxy Scientific Canada Company, a world-recognized leader in security technology and training systems. Mr. Myers is responsible for creating the relationships with industry and government in Canada that will mirror the success that its parent company, Galaxy Scientific, has enjoyed in the U.S. So far, Myers is on track having just secured several new deals for the company that will provide Galaxy with a solid base of business for the next five years.

Presenter: Doug Hum: Doug is Director of Marketing and Business Development for Corporate Renaissance Group (CRG) He has a great business sense combined with more than a decade of technology experience. He has helped organizations put processes around business practices to identify and control expenditures. Over the last number of years, Doug has been increasingly involved with relationship>management in building successful alliances. As the director of marketing and business development, Doug will be working closely with the existing CRG channel and alliances while looking to further expand globally. Before rejoining CRG, Doug served as the business development manager responsible for a third party developer program at a global telecommunications firm. While working at the telecom firm, he managed to double the number of partners in the program and implemented procedures and ROI tools surrounding the program. Doug has held other roles within the financial sector where he was responsible for project management, system implementations, development and support of applications. During his career, he has helped organizations identify best practices, managed their data and infrastructure and provided strategic planning. Doug holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) from Carleton University and an Executive MBA from the University of Ottawa.

Presenter: Russell Newbury: Mr. Newbury has more than 18 years of sales, marketing, and senior management experience. He is currently Director of Sales with SIPquest Inc. an Ottawa-based VOIP software builder specializing in the "SIP" protocol - the new worldwide standard for interoperability and feature-rich IP Telephony services. SIPquest's Chief Scientist co-authored the SIP protocol.

Before joining SIPquest he was Vice-President, Sales for Storm Internet, an ISP best known for Wireless Broadband Access. Prior to this, he was Vice-President Marketing and Sales then Chief Operating Officer for C-Com Satellite Systems where he designed and executed a turnaround strategy leading to triple-digit revenue growth and the first profitable quarter in the company's 4 year history. Before that, he was Vice-President Marketing and Sales for CubeWerx Inc. a Gatineau software builder of Oracle-based Web-Mapping solutions whose customers include NASA and the European Space Agency. He was a top sales executive with Swedish Telecom giant Ericsson Communications and prior to that, an Associate Partner with a Montreal-based consulting firm providing Marketing and Sales expertise to SME's. Mr. Newbury earned a Bachelor of Engineering from McGill University and an Executive MBA from the University of Ottawa.
