   ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT SOCIETY 

Spring 2004 seminar series 

A series of full day seminar modules are presented by experts on business topics.   We are pleased to offer those as part of EPIC EMS initiative at reduced cost to participants (thanks to our sponsors).  Application will be made to EIC for 4 CEU EIC credits and the equivalent PMI PDU is 6 hours. Please note late changes in afternoon presentation.

Project Management in 2004

1.  Dr. Jean Couillard  (AM) Project management in 2004

Partial list of topics to be covered (see details below):   What is project management? What are today's tools used for Project management? How do you define project success? What are the phases of the project life cycle? What are the characteristics of a project? How do you define project quality? What are the roles and responsibilities of a Project Manager?  What is a project feasibility study? Dr. Couillard has presented Project management seminars to many organisations and is well known for his published Research in this area.

2.  Mr. Serge Garon Program management at CSA (PM)

Program Management at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Real lessons of High Tech Project Management.  You will learn the CSA Integrated Project Risk Management System (IPRiMS) success story as a practical approach to project risk management, along with the problems encountered, the technical and programmatic solutions devised, and future improvements.   Mr. Garon also discusses the context, overall approach, techniques and tools of the system, as well as the roles of the various risk stakeholders, and explains what makes this system evolutionary and effective what you can learn from the Space Environment project management.

3.  france m. gauthier project management soft skills (PM)

Provides the link from theory (PMI, University etc.) to real practices in Project Management. This presentation will identify some of conflict resolution skills, sometimes referred to as "soft skills", and offer practical suggestions as to how these skills can be applied towards achieving project success. This will be a practical "HOW TO solve things that go wrong " workshop for participants.

4.  Mr. Edward Keyes high tech project management (PM)

Mr. Keyes discusses project management approaches for an R&D environment. He provides his experiences in applying project management concepts to R&D programs. What a realistic project management approach, Does one need theoretical constructs like WBS or PERT Charts in a High Tech R&D environment?

5.   Mr. bill bates project management Governance (PM)

Mr. Bates topics will include: A Corporate Governance Model for Portfolio and Project Management -Portfolio Management. The Portfolio Management Challenge. Linking Portfolio Management and Project Management -Project Selection. The Project Initiation Process. Project Should Support Corporate Objectives. The Project Priority Process.  

Target Audience:  Project Managers, Managers, and professionals involved in projects.

Presenter: Dr. Jean Couilliard  received the Ph.D. degree in Operations and Decisions Science in 1987, and the MBA degree in 1979, both from the Université Laval, Québec, Canada. He is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Administration of the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He concentrates his research in the areas of project management, project risk management, and quality management. Professor Couillard’s research has been published in several journals and magazines including IEEE, Transactions on Engineering Management, Decision Support System: the International Journal, the European Journal of Operational Research, the Project Management Journal, and Gestion 2000. Currently, he is involved in the development and validation of a new approach, the Earned Quality Method, to assess and control the quality of a project end product throughout its life cycle. Professor Couillard is a full member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE, and the Project Management Institute, PMI.

Presenter: Mr. Serge Garon is currently Director of Project Management for the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and is an invited professor at the University of Ottawa.  As part of his career at the CSA, he was also Risk Manager for the Canadian Space Station program and assistant Project Manager for Radarsat.-2. He also has extensive experience with DND where one of his positions was manager of naval architecture for project Trump. He is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP), a PMI instructor and has written several publications on project management.. He has a B.Sc degree in Chemical engineering, a M.Sc in Naval Architecture and a certificate in naval management from MIT.  

Presenter:  France M. Gauthier:  For over 15 years, France M. Gauthier, a Ph.D. in Business Education from the Université de Montréal, has been part of the Bank of Montreal Team in Montreal. In the Business field, she held management positions in public and private large-scale organizations and financial institutions where she managed Life Insurance and Trusts Accounts. As a consulta nt, she has planned and designed training programs, intervened in strategic control, public communication, organizational development and strategic planning and change management. She is a counselor in personal and organizational change management and her approach is based on the individual, the product or service, the process as well as on the functional management problematic. She lectures at University du Québec en Outaouis HR Management for PM and Soft Skills in Business.

Presenter: Edward Keyes, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Semiconductor Insights, he was promoted to his current role in January 2000. Since joining the company in 1991, Mr. Keyes has held a series of progressively senior technical and management positions, including Manager of Process Analysis, Director of Intellectual Property Services, and Vice-President Operations.  Mr. Keyes graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics and subsequently completed a Master of Electrical Engineering in 1987 at Carleton University. Prior to Semiconductor Insights, Mr. Keyes worked as a senior process engineer with Optotek Ltd. and was also a member of the research staff at Carleton University. Mr. Keyes possesses a very strong knowledge of semiconductor technology and intellectual property.  Mr. Keys is an IEEE Member.

Presenter: Bill Bates is the Chief Executive Officer of Bates Project Management Inc., a private company with a business history of 28 years, specializing in project management services. He holds his B.S. from the University of Maryland and M.A. in the Technology of Management from the American University. Bill is an past member of the Project Management Council of the Conference Board of Canada and frequently delivers presentations for local PMI Chapters, Project World conferences, and for a Conference Board of Canada symposium.   He is also a member of the Research Member Advisory Group of the Project Management Institute. He is involved in multiple and extensive speaking engagements on a regular basis across Canada and the US.
