Abstract

Silicon photonics are the semiconductor integration of EIC and PIC on a silicon substrate (wafer) with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. On the other hand, co-packaged optics (CPO) are heterogeneous integration packaging methods to integrate the optical engine (OE) which consists of photonic ICs (PIC) and the electrical engine (EE) which consists of the electronic ICs (EIC) as well as the switch ASIC (application specific IC). The advantages of CPO are: (a) to reduce the length of the electrical interface between the OE/EE (or PIC/EIC) and the ASIC, (b) to reduce the energy required to drive the signal, and (c) to cut the latency which leads to better electrical performance. In the next few years, we will see more implementations of a higher level of heterogeneous integration of PIC and EIC, whether it is for performance, form factor, power consumption or cost.

Speaker Bio

John H. Lau, with more than 40 years of R&D and manufacturing experience in semiconductor packaging, has published more than 530 peer-reviewed papers (385 are the principal investigator), 52 issued and pending US patents (31 are the principal inventor), and 23 textbooks. John is an elected IEEE fellow, IMAPS Fellow, and ASME Fellow and has been actively participating in industry/academia/society meetings/conferences to contribute, learn, and share.

Presented by the IEEE WIE Carleton University Student Branch:

IEEE WIE News

The IEEE WIE Carleton Student Branch hosted the Transition from Academia to Industry speaker panel on 27th March 2025. Distinguished speakers were invited for an enriching panel discussion about their journey from academia to the workforce.

This helped students get an opportunity to gain real-world insights about the labor market, skills employers look for as well as providing networking opportunities with the panelists. The event was co-hosted with the IEEE Computer Society, IEEE AP-S/MTT-S, IEEE SP,OE & GRS, IEEE YP Affinity Group and was a great success!

Presented by the IEEE AP-S/MTT-S Ottawa Section Jt. Chapter:

IEEE AP-S News
The IEEE AP-S/MTT-S Ottawa Section conducted the INRS-EMT Millimeter Wave Laboratory webinar. It was an insightful session with Prof. Serioja Tatu from INRS - Institut national de la recherche scientifique, diving into cutting-edge millimeter-wave circuits, modules, and interferometric systems on 3rd April 2025.

They also conducted Metamaterials and Antennas for Future Transportation Systems and Smart Cities with Prof. Divitha Seetharamdoo, from International Université Gustave Eiffel on March 27th 2025. The discussion focused on improving road safety by enhanced radar detection capabilities, through the development of retroreflective surfaces.

Furthermore, a session on VNA Measurements and De-embedding for High-Speed and RF Applications was held on 31st March 2025 in collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz with speakers Mahwash A. and Shijie Wang.

Photonics North 2025 Conference comes to Ottawa!

2025 Photonics North Conference will take place at the Rogers Centre in Ottawa from May 20 to 23, 2025.

This internationally recognized event aims to reinforce the connections between theory and application and build stronger ties between university research and industry needs. They welcome leading researchers to share their latest findings, as well as industry exhibitors to present their products and services. Photonics North is a great opportunity to network with key players in the community!

2025 has been declared the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology by the United Nations. In line with this celebration, we have given the 2025 Photonics North conference a theme: Quantum Research and Applications. While ample space will be devoted to this theme via dedicated Plenary and Tutorial talks, the conference will maintain its traditional structure, with topical sessions covering all relevant aspects of modern photonics.
