An Overview of Telesat's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Lightspeed System
The Ottawa Section of the IEEE Consultants Network invites all to a presentation on the Telesat's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Lightspeed System. This is a joint event with the IET Ottawa Local Network.
Telesat is developing an advanced constellation of satellites in low earth orbit (LEO), Telesat Lightspeed, to provide enterprise-class, low latency, high speed connectivity anywhere in the world, using state-of-the-art space and ground satellite technologies. Developed here in Canada, it will offer superior services for aviation and maritime mobility connectivity, fixed enterprise, mobile backhaul and government services among others. The presentation will provide a program update as well as an architecture overview highlighting the main technical characteristics and the features of the system.
For some applications, in particular digital connectivity, the lower altitude of of LEO satellite constellations provide advantages over a GEO satellite. Primarily, these are lower power requirements and latency. The propagation delay for a round-trip internet protocol transmission via GEO satellite can be over 600ms, but as low as 125ms for a MEO satellite or even 30ms for a LEO system.
Date and Time: 2024-04-11, 18:45 to 21:00 Venue: Britannia Yacht Club, Ottawa (2777 Cassels St, Ottawa, Ontario K2B 6N6)
