Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) in IEEE and Christie Lake Kids Partner on Solar Project for Underprivileged Youth in Ottawa, Canada
The EPICS in IEEE solar project proposed by young participants in Christie Lake Kids (CLK), an Ottawa-based charitable organization serving economically disadvantaged children and youth by providing recreation and skill-building programs has been completed. Approved by EPICS in IEEE in April 2016, the EPICS in IEEE solar project installed hot showers at CLK’s summer camp, to help improve the nature learning and outdoor experiences for young people often experiencing nature for the first time outside the city.

IEEE Ottawa Section TISP and Ciena partner to provide CLK Science Badge
program at the 2017 CLK Summer Camp Sessions.
Several IEEE volunteers and volunteers from the Ciena Cares program attended CLK camp on July 11th and 25th to promote science and engineering to CLK youth. Three activity stations were setup for the day and the youth rotated through them building circuits, creating a water filtration system and building solar ovens to make S'mores. A third day is planned for Aug 10th. CLK serves economically disadvantaged children and youth by providing recreation and skill-building programs. IEEE Ottawa section also sponsored a Lego robotics workshop as part of the inner city after school program during the school year. Our joint partnership with CLK enables our volunteers to help expose science and engineering to youth that might not see this how much fun this field can be.
