Call for Volunteers - ORC 2017
Arduinos, 3D printing, networking with professionals, Lego Mindstorms, Lego displays, FREE LUNCH … what more can you ask for? The IEEE Ottawa Robotics Competition (ORC) is Ottawa’s largest non-profit robotics competition that attracts 700+ attendees annually.
To enrich your volunteering portfolio, to network with industry professionals, to apply for future leadership positions within our organization, and to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders, sign up NOW as a volunteer at http://orc.ieeeottawa.ca/volunteering. Mark your calendars for this year’s competition, Saturday, May 27th! All you need to be a great volunteer is enthusiasm and a contagious smile. Absolutely no programming/robotics knowledge required.
Check out last year’s competition at http://bit.ly/ORC2016OTTCITIZEN. Students design and build robots to compete in a day filled with exciting Lego Mindstorms and Arduino challenges. One of our most popular challenges, Sumo wrestling involves a UFC-style fight between two robots! For more information on the ORC, please visit http://orc.ieeeottawa.ca or email us at orcinfo@ieeeottawa.ca.
Thank you for your time.

May 24-26, 2017, the Canadian Printable Electronics Industry Association (CPEIA) will be bringing together the printable, flexible and wearable electronics industry for its annual symposium at Centennial College, Toronto.
Using the coupon code cpeia-partner2017b IEEE members can register for CPES at 15 per cent off the regular non-CPEIA member rate of $795 + HST.
Come to learn, network and develop partnerships for collaboration and business development. You can learn more at www.CPES2017.ca
With 30+ speakers and over 200 participants from 120 organizations in attendance, CPES2017 is Canada’s premier meeting ground for technology developers, industrial companies and end-users to discuss how they can work together to manufacture and commercialize new products and applications. Academic researchers can showcase their research and discover how they can link it to market needs and opportunities. Day 1 of the program features Key Applications, while Day 2 is dedicated to Manufacturing. The optional Day 3 offers master classes, a financing session and mentoring.
(This offer cannot be combined with the the student rate. It only applies to Day 1 and Day 2 of the conference. To attend Day 3 sessions, you must pay the regular fee for those activities.)

Building Trust in an IoT enabled World
Led by Jeremy Watson, President of the IET, this event will address many concerns about the missing"S" in the internet of things (IoT) "SECURITY and SAFETY". IoT covers a wide spectrum of human endeavour and there are great concerns about safety, security and robustness of systems and networks that will enable this massive connected environment.

The Present Around The World (PATW)
is an engineering competition open to university and college students or recent graduates (18 - 30 years old) in an engineering or technology field.
Individual competitors are asked to deliver a 10-minute presentation on a technical topic followed by a 5-minute Q/A period. The presentation can be based on a co-op experience, a research project, or an internship, but any topic in a science or engineering field is acceptable. The emphasis is on developing participants' presentation skills with a lesser focus on the technical content enabling competitors through various levels of studies or careers to participate on equal footing. The presentations are delivered in front of a panel of judges and audience. Presentations are given through three different competition rounds - local, regional, and global. The winner from Ottawa will be sent all expenses paid to the NA regional finals at Orlando, Florida. If successful at the regional level, they will be sent to London, England for the Global Finals all expenses paid.
The Ottawa PATW will be hosted at Carleton U on May 27th 2017.The deadline for registration is May 25th 2017 at noon. Competitors need to reserve their slot at https://patwottawa2017.eventbrite.com

November 27-December 1, 2017
Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
The symposium will be held within the 2017 IEEE Symposium Series
on Computational Intelligence (IEEE SSCI 2017)
MOTIVATION
Given the current global security environment, there has
been increased interest within the security and defense
communities in novel techniques for solving challenging problems.
The genesis of this interest lies in the fact that repeated
attempts of using traditional techniques have left many important
problems unsolved, and in some cases, not addressed. New problems have emerged within the broad areas of security and
defense that are difficult to tackle with conventional methods, thus requiring new techniques for detecting and adapting
to emerging threats. The purpose of the symposium is to present current and ongoing efforts in computational intelligence (e.g., neural networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, swarm intelligence, and other emerging learning or optimization techniques) as applied to security and defense problems.
IMPORTANT DATES
Special Session Proposals: April 2, 2017
Paper Submissions: July 2, 2017
Early Registration: September 24, 2017
Looking for volunteers: Ottawa Humanitarian Initiatives
The Ottawa section Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) would like to re-start its activities and is looking for volunteers for the following roles: chair, vice-chair, treasurer, secretary/communications.
