IEEE Ottawa Year-In-Review

__________________________________________
The IEEE Ottawa Section wishes all its members Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year

Below are some highlights of 2016

SPAC 2016

The Student Professional Awareness Conference (SPAC) is an annual formal dinner and networking event organized by the IEEE Carleton, uOttawa, and Algonquin student branches that aims to bring students closer to their careers. In 2016, 157 students and 61 professional representatives attended to explore and take advantage of the opportunities available within the tech-based academic and industrial sectors in Ottawa. The event include pre and post event networking sessions, two speakers talking about the future of tech and careers from a hardware and software perspective, and a buffet styled meal. Christie Lake Kids Bubblegum Machine Workshop with the Teacher In Service Program Committee

Ottawa Section has been involved with introducing STEM to the young people of Christie Lake Kids for over two years now. Last year (2015) we introduced them to the fundamentals of automotive engineering through the Rubberband Racers. Early this year (2016) we again introduced the kids to the IEEE and the TISP lesson plans, and asked them to choose one that inspired them. The chosen plan was the Gumball Machine, a popular choice, where they apply their ingenuity to the design and construction of novel gumboil delivery machines. In the process they learned about the concepts of potential and kinetic energy, team cooperation, the engineering design process and marketing (the machines should appeal to potential customers).

The activity was performed during three 2 hour sessions, Wednesday evenings, in February. The youth were of middle and early high school age, and worked in teams. At the end of the day three machines were built of wildly different design and scale, demonstrating the imagination and enthusiasm we sought to achieve. As a final test of the concepts, a group of early elementary children from a yoga class were invited to use and evaluate the machines.

The activity was such a success that we have been asked to conduct more TISP workshops next year.

7th Annual Women in Engineering Wine and Cheese

The 7th Annual Women in Engineering Wine and Cheese, held at the Orange Art Gallery on March 9th 2016, brought together students, professors and industry professionals to celebrate women in engineering. The evening was hosted by the Women in Engineering affinity groups from the University of Ottawa and Carleton IEEE Student Branches, and featured speeches from the software developers at Cisco. Students were given the opportunity to make meaningful connections with professors and industry professionals, while employers were able to meet the next generation of innovators and problem solvers. https://www.facebook.com/pg/IEEEWIEuOttawa/photos/?tab=album&album_id=963689897033878

IEEE Ottawa Robotics Competition 2016

The ORC 2016 had a record-breaking 307 students from 73 teams competing in 6 fun-filled Lego and Arduino challenges and was featured in the Ottawa Citizen (http://bit.ly/ORC2016OTTCITIZEN).

Thanks to IBM, the past ORC competitors and current ORC Co-Chairs, Heidi Li and David Huynh, started the day by energizing the crowd dancing to the Macarena with NAO (http://bit.ly/ORC2016OPCER) and ended the day virally with Gangnam Style (not publicly available).

Photos and videos from the ORC 2016 are available at http://bit.ly/ORC2016FbPhotoAlbum and https://youtube.com/user/ieeeorc/videos, respectively.

Mark your calendars! The 15th ORC is on Saturday, May 27th, 2017 at Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School!

IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) International Student Conference (ISC) 2016

The IEEE EMBS International Student Conference (ISC) 2016 ran from May 29, 2016 to May 31, 2016 at Carleton University with an overarching theme of ‘Expanding the Boundaries of Biomedical Engineering and Healthcare’. ISC 2016 was a successful conference organized by students for students. The conference included 3 distinguished keynote speakers, 6 workshops, 3 panels, 18 exhibitors, paper competition and a design competition. The papers presented at ISC 2016 were accepted in IEEE Xplore. The social program included an entertaining gala at the Shaw centre and numerous networking events. Over 233 delegates attended from Canada, Peru, Italy, South Korea, United Kingdom and the United States of America.

IEEE Ottawa Summer Seminar

Organized by: IEEE Ottawa Antennas and Propagation Society and Microwave Theory & Techniques Society (AP/MTT) Joint Chapter, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Chapter, Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology (CPMT) Chapter, and Communications Society, Broadcast Technology Society, and Consumer Electronics Society (ComSoc/BTS/CES) Joint Chapter.

Dr. Zhenfei Song from EMC Laboratory, Information & Electronic Division, National Institute of Metrology (NIM) of China, presented two technical talks entitled “Recent Progress in Microwave Antenna Precision Measurement at National Institute of Metrology (NIM) of China” and “Quantum Based Self-traceable RF E-field Sensing by Using Rydberg States” in School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), University of Ottawa, on 14 July 2016.

2016 IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility

Annually held IEEE International Symposium on EMC with a SIPI subsection.

Organized by the Ottawa Section and the EMC Chapter, the Symposium was the first of its kind outside of the USA and the first in Canada. The Symposium was held on July 25th - 29th at The Shaw Centre in Ottawa.

Qiubo Ye (EMC chapter vice chair) was the co-chair of the conference and Syed Bokhari (Chairman of The EMC Ottawa chapter) was the Technical program co-chair.

Dr. Sudhakar Rao, Technical Fellow, Engineering & Global Products Division, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, 1 Space Park Drive, Redondo Beach, CA 90278, USA, presented the IEEE AP-S Distinguished Lecture entitled “Advanced Antenna Systems for 21st Century Satellite Communication Payloads” in School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), University of Ottawa, on 9 September 2016.

IEEE Ottawa Lunch and Learn Initiative

2016 saw the launch of the IEEE Ottawa Lunch and Learn Initiative in the Kanata Tech Hub (Canada's largest Tech Hub)

IEEE Ottawa Lunch and Learn is an initiative to bridge the gap and derive synergy between Ottawa Industry, Academia, and Government. The initiative, on a monthly basis, brings a speaker from either Industry, Academia, or Government, to the heart of the Kanata Tech Hub to provide a technical seminar in their respective area of expertise. The Seminar is accompanied by a complimentary lunch and a space to connect, communicate, and collaborate.

The IEEE Ottawa Lunch and Learn Initiative, lead by the IEEE Ottawa Computer Society, is made possible by community support from March Networks, Kanata North BIA, and Invest Ottawa.

Further efforts are being made in 2017 to grow the initiative into a staple of the Kanata Tech Hub.

Local Hack Day 2016

Each year, Major League Hacking (MLH) sponsors a mini hack day that takes place all over the world. On local hack day, people are invited to work on whatever software or hardware projects they want in an open, encouraging environment. This year, IEEE Carleton hosted its first local hack day and drew roughly 100 attendees from all levels, University, College and High School.
