- Local entrepreneur
and technology guru, Bruce Gregory - former president and CEO of
Extreme Packet Devices Inc. and now Chairman of Potentia
Semiconductor - will deliver a keynote address and provide valuable
insight from his experience on how important Intellectual Property
is to technology companies.

Panelists:
Tom Houston,
Managing Partner of the Ottawa office of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP.
His practice focuses on corporate and securities law, with
particular emphasis on technology companies. Mr.
Houston is recognized as a leading practitioner in the LEXPERT(TM)
Legal Directory in the areas of “Computer and I.T. Law”,
“Corporate Commercial Law” and “Technology” and is
Vice-Chair of the Ottawa Technology Lawyers Group. Mr.
Houston has extensive experience in venture capital transactions,
mergers and acquisitions and public and private offerings, the
majority of which were cross-border transactions.
Carol
McDonald, Partner
with the Assurance and Business Advisory Services (ABAS)Group of
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC),Ottawa and she is Canadian ABAS
leader for PwC ’s TICE. With over twenty years experience
providing financial accounting, auditing and business advisory
services, Carol ’s primary area of focus has been in the
technology industry, including significant software experience for
the last ten years. She is a Chartered Accountant (CA), a Chartered
Business Valuator (CBV) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in
the US (Illinois). Through public company clients, she has extensive
experience on both US GAAP,US GAAS and SEC reporting. Carol
is on the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Centre for Research and
Innovation.
Derek
Nuhn, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of
Semiconductor Insights, was promoted to his current position in
January 2000, after holding a series of progressively senior
positions since joining the company in 1994. Mr. Nuhn brings 16
years of industry experience to his current role, including senior
technical and management posts with Elcombe Systems (formerly
Newbridge Networks Telecom), Mitel, and Siltronics. As well, Mr.
Nuhn sits on the Board of Semiconductor Insights Europe. Mr. Nuhn
holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the
University of Saskatchewan, a certificate from Queens University
Executive Development program, and is a long-standing member of the
IEEE. In recognition of his strong technical and business acumen,
Mr. Nuhn has served as an expert witness in several intellectual
property suits.
Steve
Garland, Partner of Smart & Biggar Canada's leading law
firm practicing exclusively in the area of intellectual property and
technology law. His practice focuses on intellectual property
litigation and technology law. Mr. Garland is also an adjunct
professor at the University of Ottawa Law School where he teaches
patent law, and is the Chairman of the editorial board of Patent
World. He has acted on many patent litigation matters that have
involved a wide variety of subjects including telecommunications and
biotech. Mr. Garland has appeared as counsel in intellectual
property cases at all levels of the Canadian Court System including
the Supreme Court of Canada. The 2003 issue of the Canadian Legal
LEXPERT (Legal Expert) Directory recognized Mr. Garland as a leading
Intellectual Property Litigator.
Pat
DiPietro, General Partner, VenGrowth. Pat DiPietro joined
Vengrowth as a General Partner Oct 2001, with over 24 years of
experience in High Technology. Prior to VenGrowth, DiPietro was a
Vice President of 3G WI’mireless and an executive member of
Internet product portfolio management investment board at Nortel
Networks. He previously occupied senior managerial roles in R&D
and operations within Nortel and Bell-Northern Research.
DiPietro has been an angel investor, advisor and board member
helping to start a few local high-tech enterprises. He currently is
chairman of the board of three companies and is on the board of
three others. Pat holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering from Queen's
University, and has completed MBA and Telecommunications masters’
courses at Duke and Carleton respectively
