1. Low-complexity image processing approaches for detection of necrotizing enterocolitis and seizures in newborns

Speaker: Dr. Guy Kouamou Ntonfo, Research Fellow, University of Modena and Reggio Emila, Italy
Date/Time: April 22, 2015 / 12:00 - 13:00
Location: Mackenzie Room 4359, Carleton University

Organizer: James Green
Organized
by:
EMBS-Ottawa

Abstract:
Necrotizing enterocolitis and neonatal seizures are two pathologies which diagnosis medical personnel have to daily face in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. These pathologies have to be promptly and accurately recognized in order to establish timely treatments. Necrotizing enterocolitis is a serious neonatal gastrointestinal complication that mainly
occursto underweighted preterm newborns. It presents with a wide range of symptoms which are not specific to the disease and there can be a rapid deterioration that can lead to septic shock and death. Abdominal radiographic imaging and ultrasonography are the most common diagnostic modalities currently used but these tools do not reliably detect Necrotizing enterocolitis in its early stages. Most of the neonates affected by perinatal diseases are at risk of neonatal seizures, which are the most common sign of acute neurological dysfunctions. They are age-dependent phenomena with onset within the 28th day of life in newborns at term and within the 44th week of conceptional age in preterm infants. Currently, the traditional method of diagnosis is based on EEG monitoring. The EEG analysis is a time-consuming technique which requires particularly skilled medical personnel, not always available in a neonatal care unit. In this talk, examples of low complexity image processing-based approaches to the detection of neonatal seizures and necrotizing enterocolitis will be presented.

3.Call for Book Chapters:"Computational Intelligence in Wireless Sensor Networks: Recent Advances and Future Challenges"

To be published in: Springer's Studies in Computational Intelligence Series

Website: http://www.ieeeottawa.ca/ci/ciwsn-book/

Abstract submission deadline: April 30, 2015

Volume Co-Editors:
Ajith Abraham, Machine Intelligence Research Labs, USA
Rafael Falcon, Larus Technologies Corporation, Canada
Mario Koeppen,
Kyuhsu Institute of Technology, Japan

Motivation:
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are rapidly becoming a technological cornerstone for modern societies. These collections of autonomous and distributed nodes capable of sensing,
communication, processing and self-organization continue to earn notoriety as they serve as the backbone of emerging intelligent information-driven paradigms such as the Internet of Things, Vehicular Clouds or Cyber-Physical Systems. Over the last two decades, we have witnessed a plethora of developments related to theoretical innovations in WSNs that touch all aspects of their multi-layered design, from more robust physical layers to more efficient energy conservation and self-organization protocols. The number of published studies reporting successful WSN applications to dissimilar domains is frankly overwhelming.

On the other hand, Computational Intelligence (CI) remains a vibrant research area due to its appealing ability to deal with imprecise, vague and uncertain knowledge. Many of these uncertainty-aware modeling frameworks borrow inspiration from natural and biological processes and have proved quite effective in modeling and solving entangled real-world phenomena. Mimicking intelligent systems such as ant colonies, bird flocks, immune cells, brain structure and other highly parallel and distributed processes has contributed to alleviate the burden imposed by the computational intractability of NP-hard optimization problems and, more recently, the emergence of Big Data.

CI techniques have much to offer to WSN in terms of the realization of periodical yet vital tasks such as sensor node localization, data collection and aggregation,
energy-aware routing/broadcasting and sensor relocation. The interplay between both fields of study is growing in vitality and spills over other closely related areas such as bio-inspired computing, robotics and vehicular systems, thus crystalizing the foundations of an exciting multidisciplinary arena. Bio-inspired networking is a recently coined term that attempts to capture the impact of a large subset of CI methodologies to interconnected systems.

While computational intelligence applied to intelligent networking systems in general has received due attention in recently published volumes, we sense there is a need for gathering a representative set of the most recent undertakings having to do with novel theoretical developments and applications of Computational Intelligence to Wireless Sensor Networks. First-class contributions addressing research challenges in these areas and their CI-based solutions (i.e., fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary computation, swarm intelligence, cognitive maps, rough sets, granular computing, and other emerging learning or optimization techniques) are solicited.

Abstract
On behalf of the IEEE WCCI 2016 Organizing Committee, it is our great pleasure to invite you to the bi-annual IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (IEEE WCCI), which is the largest technical event in the field of computational intelligence. The IEEE WCCI 2016 will host three conferences: The 2016 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN 2016), the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems (FUZZ-IEEE 2016), and the 2016 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (IEEE CEC 2016) under one roof. It encourages cross-fertilization of ideas among the three big areas and provides a forum for intellectuals from all over the world to discuss and present their research findings on computational intelligence.

IEEE WCCI 2016 will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, Vancouver, Canada. Vancouver is Canada's Pacific gem, offering a winning combination of world-class hotels, meeting venues, and restaurants in a setting of spectacular beauty. Few convention cities can offer such a wide range of cosmopolitan amenities in a downtown core that is safe, clean, pedestrian friendly, and stunning in its backdrop of mountains and ocean.

IJCNN is a flagship conference of the International Neural Network Society and the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. It covers a wide range of topics in the field of neural networks, from biological neural network modeling to artificial neural computation. FUZZ-IEEE is a premier conference in the field of fuzzy systems. It covers all topics in fuzzy systems, from theory to applications. IEEE CEC is a premier event in the field of evolutionary computation, and covers all topics in evolutionary computation from theory to applications. Papers for IEEE WCCI 2016 should be submitted electronically through the congress website, and will be refereed by experts in the fields and ranked based on the criteria of originality, significance, quality and clarity.

IEEE Computational Intelligence Society has maintained its position as a leader of journals in computational intelligence. According to the 2013 Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports (JCR), CIS journals sustained their status as premier scholarly publications, earning high rankings in the Impact Factor report.
