IEEE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY SEMINAR
QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE SEMINAR
1. What is the planned learning outcome?
Participants will gain a basic understanding of a key intellectual property (IP) concepts and their application to commercial activity, including:
· What various IP regimes, such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial design and trade secrets actually protect
· The substantive and formal requirements for obtaining various forms of IP protection
· Special considerations relating to specific technologies, such as biotechnology, software, the Internet, etc.
· Where in the world to protect IP and why
· The interaction between IP laws and competition law
· How to work with an IP professional to maximize efficiency and reduce costs
· Identifying technology that is suitable for commercialization and IP protection
· The role of universities and other resources in commercializing technology
· How to understand what IP you have and how it relates to third party IP rights
· How to maximize the value of IP through various licensing and other arrangements
· How to find licensees for your technology and related IP rights
· How to set royalties for licenses
· The elements of a licensing agreement
· Infringement and validity of IP rights
· Enforcing and defending such rights
· How to develop a comprehensive IP protection and exploitation strategy for your organization
2. What instructional methods will be used?
The seminar will consist of lectures and panel discussions by the instructors followed by an interactive Q & A session with the audience.
3. What is the type of learning support and materials that will be provided?
The speaker lectures and panel discussions will be supplemented by audio-visual presentations and handouts. The seminar may also be Webcast to other IEEE Sections and will also be taped for repeat presentations.
4. How will the students demonstrate their attainment of the learning outcomes?
It is assumed that the seminar will attract those individuals who are motivated to learn the subject matter presented during the seminar. Accordingly, no formal demonstration of the attainment of learning outcomes by students will be required. At the same time, the Q & A session of the seminar and informal meetings with presenters during the breaks and lunch period will give students an opportunity to ensure that they have fully met those objectives.
5. What are the requirements for satisfactory completion?
As noted above, it is assumed that the seminar will attract those individuals who are motivated to learn the subject matter presented during the seminar. Accordingly, attendance will constitute a sufficient requirement for satisfactory completion.
