ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT TODAY
Friday, 25 May 2007, 8h30-12h00
At the Communication
Research Center, 3701 Carling Avenue, main auditorium,
building 2
SPACE
IS LIMITED, PLEASE RSVP
This half-day seminar aims at providing
participants with a better understanding of what Engineering Management
is today. It is divided into three presentations: first Dr Dan
Necsulescu will discuss the trends in Engineering Managament.
Then, Brian Sutherland
an Engineering Management Graduate Student will share his recent
experience in
Engineering Management. Finally, Dr
Hanan Anis will give a presentation on
Innovation Management. A discussion with all
the participants will end the seminar.
Target
Audience: Engineers involved or who might be involved with management
(yes, that means you)
What is Engineering Management Today? by Dr Dan Necsulescu
A large number of engineers will spend a substantial portion
of their professional careers as managers. The management of
complex and rapidly evolving technology requires improved
management
processes. As well, market pressure to deliver better products faster
and cheaper creates tremendous management challenges for engineers.
Consequently, more and more organizations strive to develop and enhance
the management skills of their engineers. This presentation will give a
brief history of Engineering Management and will discuss the needs and
the trends in Engineering Management specialization,
the evolution of Engineering Management and the job market
for Engineering
Management. It will also present what university degrees
are available and what are their admission requirements.
Recent Experience in Engineering Management, by Brian Sutherland
An Engineeering Managament Graduate Student will share his
recent experience in
Engineering Management. This second presentation will cover the skills
and the knowledge required from engineers to
become effective managers.
Innovation
Management, by Dr Hanan Anis
Innovation is not as unpredictable as most managers have come to
believe. While the outcomes of past innovations seem random, the
process by which innovations are packaged and shaped within companies
is very predictable. By understanding and managing the forces that
influence this process, companies/entrepreneurs can shape business
plans to create truly disruptive growth. This presentation is based on
Christensen's ground breaking work "The Innovator Dilemma" and the
"Innovator's Solution".

PRESENTERS:
Dr Dan S. Necsulescu
holds a Ph.D. degree
in Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Bucharest,
Romania. Dr Necsulescu joined the University of Ottawa in 1980 as a
professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has
been
the Director of the Engineering Management Master Program since 1996.
He was the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the
University of Ottawa from 1990 to 1993. He worked as a nuclear safety
engineer at Ontario Hydro in 1980. He also worked as a design
and
research engineer at the Institute of Development and Design of Power
Systems in Bucharest. Dr Necsulescu published many research articles as
well as books including: D. Necsulescu, Advanced Mechatronics, World
Scientific, (in preparation), D. Necsulescu, Mechatronics, Prentice
Hall,
2002, and R. Baican, D. Necsulescu, Applied Virtual Instrumentation,
WIT Press, 2000.
Dr
Hanan Anis holds a B.Sc from Ain-Shams University (1987),
a M.A.Sc
(1991) and a Ph.D. (1996) from University of Toronto both in Electrical
and Computer Engineering. She joined the University of Ottawa, as an
Associate Professor at the School of Information Technology (SITE) in
July 2004. Dr Anis was the co-founder and Chief Technology
Officer
at Ceyba, an optical long-haul networking company. Dr Anis played an
integral part in conceiving Ceyba's product architecture, formulating
its business plan, and successfully raising over $100M in venture
capital to finance operations. From 1994 to 2000, Dr Anis worked at
Nortel Networks in different positions conducting pioneering research
in various areas of photonics, ranging from device physics to optical
networking. Dr Anis received Nortel's 1998 Innovation award for her
work on wavelength locked lasers. She has numerous journal and
conference publications and patents. Dr Anis' current research
interests
include Biophotonics and Engineering Management.
Brian Sutherland
has been involved in technology-based product development
throughout his 26-year career with several Ottawa companies.
As a
design engineer, R&D manager and product manager,
Brian’s
teams have developed products that have sold more than 15 million units
worldwide, accounting for hundreds of millions of dollars in
revenue. Presently Brian is a Senior Product Manager at
TalkSwitch, a telecommunications equipment manufacturer with more than
20,000 customers and resellers. He holds 3 university
degrees,
the most recent of which is a Master of Engineering Management from the
University of Ottawa.
