Abstract
Muscle monitoring has a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Ultrasonic measurement provides a low-cost non-invasive imaging modality for muscle motion measurement. In this seminar, I will go over the underlying signal processing methods for ultrasonic muscle monitoring, the particular challenges and issues faced, as well as potential clinical applications.
The basic motion measurement techniques involving basic template matching and phase sensitive methods for ultrasonic muscle monitoring are first presented. The noise and motion measurement errors encountered during ultrasonic muscle measurement are examined, along with signal processing solutions and application of a wearable ultrasonic sensor to reduce motion artifacts. Finally, potential applications for ultrasonic muscle monitoring are presented for measurement of involuntary and voluntary muscle motion.

Speaker’s Bio
Andy Huang is currently a PhD candidate at Carleton University. He obtained his MASc (2012) in Biomedical Engineering from Carleton University and his MEng (2010), and BASc (2008) in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University. His research interests are in the field of digital signal processing and motion tracking using ultrasonic sensors.
