2013 IEEE Life Members Tour to Canada

While Canada may be known for its diverse and breath-taking scenery and warm hospitable people, not many are aware of its major historic pioneering contributions in technical areas of the two founding parents of IEEE, AIEEE and IRE. We are planning a ten day tour for Life Members and their companions that begins with our guests arriving in Toronto, Ontario, on Sunday August 25, and concludes in St. John’s capital of  Canada’s  Eastern-most province, Newfoundland and Labrador on Tuesday September 3, 2013.

Participants will be arriving on Sunday August 25, 2013 in Toronto, and spend the first night at the Delta Toronto Airport West. (https://www.deltahotels.com/Hotels/Delta-Toronto-Airport-West)  Following breakfast on Monday morning, ( Monday August 26, 2013) delegates will travel to Paris, Ontario, home of the “First Distant Speech Transmission in Canada, 1876” milestone. Following lunch, the next destination of the tour is St. Catherine’s, Ontario, to visit Decew Falls  milestone,  tour the Tesla monument http://www.teslasociety.com/victoria.htm and enjoy the sights of the World-famous spectacular Niagara Falls for some free time with a possible tour of the Rankine Power Plant at the top of the falls. http://www.niagaragreenbelt.com/listings/58-hydrolectric-stations/695-william-birch-rankine-power-station.html

Delegates travel back to the hotel in Toronto, arriving in time for a dinner hosted by the Toronto Section. On August 27, 2013 morning the tour visits the C. H. The group will depart Toronto, en-route to Ottawa (Canada’s National Capital) with a stop in Peterborough around 1-1:30 for a lunch sponsored by the Peterborough Section at Holiday Inn Waterfront. On August 29, 2013, delegates travel to Montreal where they will be staying at the down-town Delta Centreville hotel. https://www.deltahotels.com/Hotels/Delta-Centre-Ville . Montreal is home of Hydro Québec, on 75 Boul René Lévesque and learn about the “ First 735 kV AC Transmission System, 1965” milestone and its achievements. http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Milestones:First_735_kV_AC_Transmission_System,_1965

On August 30, 2013 delegates travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick and  stay at the Delta Fredericton hotel. https://www.deltahotels.com/Hotels/Delta-Fredericton

On August 31, 2013 the tour commences to Sydney, Nova Scotia, Baddeck and visit the Bell museum before heading to a hotel in Sydney for dinner. The next day, on September 1, 2013, the group heads  to Sydney Mines to visit the “The First Submarine Transatlantic Telephone Cable System (TAT-1), 1956” milestone, http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Milestones:The_First_Submarine_Transatlantic_Telephone_Cable_System_(TAT-1),_1956  The next destination is the ferry dock in North Sydney for travel to Newfoundland on the NFLD – Ferry which leaves at 12:15 pm.

On September 3, 2013, delegates travel home from St. John’s Newfoundland.
